Raise Your Voice Competition

Every year, St Dominic’s School and St John’s School in Scarborough come together during Term 4 to compete in the ‘Raise Your Voice’ competition, which is a competition that provides students with an opportunity to express their views confidently, using appropriate speaking skills. It also encourages students to research and compose a speech that shows a depth of understanding of the topic. The Year 5 and Year 6 students attended the competition which was held at St John’s School this year.

Students were prepared for the speeches through their English lessons in class. Then during Week 3, Mr Sullivan and Mrs Smith listened to all students in Year 5 and Year 6 present a persuasive speech to the class on a topic of their choice. They were assessed against a rubric and the top three speakers from each class were selected to represent St Dominic’s School in the competition.

The selected students were:

Year 5 – Estelle, Harley and Lachlan
Year 6 – Harry, Daniel and Luca

The adjudicators, both principals from the schools, had an extremely difficult job to judge the speakers to determine a winner for each year group. The topics were all very different and the speakers spoke with such calibre and determination. The Year 5 winner was a St John’s student; however, the Year 6 category was won by one of our very own, Harry. His topic was on Anaphylaxis, which Harry is extremely passionate about due to being anaphylactic to nuts himself.

It was a great day, and the students represented St Dominic’s School with pride and conviction. We look forward to participating in the competition again next year.
