Out of School Achievement Awards – Student Leadership Initiative

Earlier this term, Ava Corke (Head Girl) met with me to discuss a suggestion she had regarding acknowledging, through a new certificate, the sometimes unheard about out of school achievements of the students here at St Dominic’s School.  During our discussion we talked about our current awards, such as the ‘Spirit of Jesus’ and ‘Merit Certificates’ but realised that these generally only acknowledged the great work being done by students while at school.  Through Ava’s own experience of having an out of school achievement acknowledged in the newsletter, she understood how valuable and uplifting this kind of acknowledgement can be for a student.  After our initial meeting, Ava set about designing some new certificates, an example of which you can see below.

Ava, joined by Matthew Zaknich (Head Boy) and staff, are now actively listening for stories told about out of school achievements and acts of kindness.  Staff inform Ava and Matthew if they hear about something they believe fits the criteria and then Ava, Matthew and I meet when necessary to create the certificate.  The awards are then signed and presented by Ava and Matthew at either the next Monday or Friday morning assembly.

A wonderful initiative by our student leaders, one that continues to help develop and strengthen our schools vision and mission.  Thank you, Ava and Matthew!
