Stage 9 Building Project Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Year 1 to 6 students still have access to the current toilet block throughout the construction period?

Yes, the current Year 1 to 6 toilet block will remain accessible during the majority of the building program and will be securely fenced off from the building site.

The Year 1 to 6 toilets will be closed from Wednesday, 1st September through until Monday, 6th September.  Four temporary toilets will be delivered and set up on Tuesday, 31st August under the verandah outside the hall.  These toilets will provide, in addition to the hall toilets, facilities for our Year 1 to 6 students to use throughout the three days.  Our Kindy and Pre Primary students will continue to use the hall toilets as per normal.  A fenced off area with shade cloth will be erected to provide privacy for the students entering and exiting the toilets, cleaning of the facilities will be conducted regularly, and a staff member will be rostered on to supervise the area throughout the day.   On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and over the weekend, a new entry and reconfiguration of the current toilet block will take place so that our students can then continue using these facilities for the remainder of the school year.

What impact will there be on the students use of the Court Area?

The southern half of the current court area has been designated as a construction worker parking zone and is where a demountable lunchroom and site office will be located.  Our students will have access to the Northern half of the play area during the majority of the build and the area will be clearly delineated by a secure fence.  The resurfacing of the court area will take place towards the end of the building program.

Will Playgroup still run on a Monday morning during Term 3 and 4?

Yes, although some adjustments will need to be made.  Playgroup will have access to the sandpit and creek area of our Junior Nature Play Space from 9:00am on Monday morning.  Instead of transitioning to the Hall at around 10:00am, the group will have access to the undercover area the Parish Centre behind the Church for additional play and morning tea through until 10:40am.  The undercover area roller doors will be shut and families will have access to the canteen for morning tea preparations.  Toys from the current Playgroup storeroom will be relocated to a storage box just inside the Kindy/ Pre Primary gate the Parish Centre.

How will Kiss and Ride operate during the construction period?

Arrangements have been made for us to maintain access to the path along the Kindy and Pre Primary classrooms at the start and end of the school day, for the majority of the build .  Families will be able to drop off and pick up students as normal.  An alternative Kiss and Ride area has been devised to provide an option if access to this path is lost at any time during Term 3 and 4.

Fencing erected at the ‘kiss and ride’ driveway will enable this service to continue as normal with only minor adaptations required.  The placement of the fencing provides safe entry into the school via a new temporary pathway.  Staff will continue to be on duty in this area both before and after school, however, supervision will be increased, with two staff members supervising this gate at the start and end of each school day.  Kindy and Pre Primary students entering through this gate will be safely escorted down to the hall by one of our Education Assistants and walked by an adult up to the gate at the end of the day.

Where will the impacted classes be located during the build?

During the six month build window and commencing in Term 3, our Kindy and Pre Primary classrooms will be set up in the School Hall with the rooms delineated by concertina doors.  The students will have access to the toilets in the hall and consideration has been given to establishing a safe outdoor play space for these classes.

The Year 1 classroom will be relocated during the build to our current Library space. with our books and shelving moving over to the Parish Centre behind the Church.  Staff will have the opportunity to take classes safely over to the Parish Centre and provide the students with their normal book exchange opportunities each week.

How is the Stage 9 project being funded?

Catholic Education Western Australia approved funding for the project via the following three avenues;

  • Australian Government grant funding
  • A low interest loan with debt servicing
  • Small school cash contribution

Will it just be a resurfacing of the courts or a full redevelopment?

It will be a complete redevelopment of the current courts at the Western end of our block, including a new surface, line markings, rings etc.  The completed court will have provisions for basketball and netball with varying height rings.

How and when will the removal of the current asbestos be done?

For safety reasons, the removal of asbestos materials will be done outside of school term time.  The schedule has this work marked for completion during the middle of the year school holidays, ensuring that the site is safe for the return of students in Term 3.

For safety reasons, the removal of asbestos materials will be conducted outside of school hours, ensuring that the site is safe prior to members of our community returning to school.

Will students still be able to borrow Library books during the building project?

Yes.  Our books and shelving will be moved to the Parish Centre behind the Church.  Staff will have the opportunity to take classes safely over to the Parish Centre and provide students with their normal book exchange opportunities each week.

The Library book shelves will be reorganised into the back section of the Library, still leaving ample space for the Year 1 classroom to be established.  Students will be provided with the opportunity to borrow books through a process that will not impact on the Year 1 students.  After speaking with the class about their interests, staff will regularly take out a selection of books for the students to exchange each week within their own classroom setting.  Students who access the Lexile collection, will be provided with regular opportunities to exchange books at different times of the day, times that will not impact on the Year 1 classroom.

Lexile borrowing is available on a Tuesday and Thursday between 1:00pm and 1:20pm, and Wednesday and Friday mornings between 8:15am and 8:30am.

When will the replacement of the windows and doors take place in the Year 2 to 6 classrooms?

This work will take place during a school holiday break, ensuring that there is no requirement for these classes to be relocated during the building program.
